How could this not be good though? It has three of the best flavors, banana, peanut butter and chocolate all together in one decadent morning treat.

Note that the sweetness of this smoothie comes from the ripeness of the bananas so be sure to use some that are well ripened. If you still would like it a little bit sweeter you could add in a little honey or cut back a touch on the cocoa powder.

This is one creamy, protein rich smoothie you are going to love!

Ingredients for a chocolate banana shake in a blender

What You Need To Make This Banana Shake;

  • Overripe bananas
  • Almond milk
  • Ice
  • Peanut butter
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Vanilla extract

Why Overripe Bananas?

As bananas ripen they get sweeter and sweeter. There are two benefits of using them in this shake, one you don’t need to throw away your overripe bananas and waste food. Two, the sweetness from the bananas helps sweeten this shake naturally which is always great. If you need extra sweetness go for honey or another natural sweetener to keep this banana shake as healthy as can be!

Absolutely love this recipe. I make this for my family a couple times a week. Add protein powder to make it a protein smoothie.

So, the first time I tried this recipe I didn’t have any frozen bananas, but I was desperate to try it so I made it with room temp bananas and a little extra ice. DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE!! The taste was okay, not great, and the texture was horrid! So then I froze some bananas and tried again and I could not believe the difference! Both in taste and texture! It is now by far my favorite smoothie. I usually add a little protein powder too. But this tastes almost exactly like my favorite milkshake, and the best part for me is that this smoothie is dairy free, so I can eat it without any issues! (I have a slight dairy allergy.) I use either coconut milk or almond milk in this, both are fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I would’ve never thought to do it!

can you use regular cocoa powder instead of unsweetened? Also is this good for weight loss?

  • Brittney

how strong is the banana taste? And does this help you lose weight.. ?

I usually don’t comment but I had to. First off this recipe is from minimalist baker and secondly this recipe is delicious and doesn’t need variations. It’s annoying reading the comments of how you changed the recipe. Piece of advice NO ONE CARES. If you aren’t satisfied with this recipe start your own blog! Thanks for sharing Jaclyn

I love your comments, and couldn’t agree more. I find this on a lot of sites, people feel the need to tell you what they do differently. You’re right, no one cares, and your opinion doesn’t count for this recipe when you change it.

Here is my variation using all budget goods

20g ( 1 heaped teaspoon) peanut butter (Saiins Basics)

    I banana chopped

100 ml Alpro Almond Milk (minimum liquid)

1 teaspoon clear honey (Sains basics)

1 heaped teaspoon cocoa powder ( Sains)

    Ice to dilute and chill

Only makes for 1 short glass, increase liquid for more volume

    290 cals. 6 fibre, 28 sugar, 42 carbs, 11 fat, 7 protein.

Low cost (UK) for all ingredients which will make lots = £5.32

Add Whey or Casein protein powder and more almond milk if you want a training level drink. Leave out the honey if you don’t want the sugar and cals.
